Do the timestamps in my traces originate from ecu.test or from the connected tool?

Solution

If you are recording via an external tool (e.g. ETAS INCA, dSPACE ControlDesk) the tool itself will create the timestamps.

ecu.test will get the trace file from the tool and use it as is.
