When I try to open ecu.test files (e.g. test reports or packages) by double-clicking them in Windows Explorer, they open with an older version of ecu.test, even though I have a newer version installed. Download links from test.guide to reports are also affected. The linking of these files to the respective application is somehow broken. How can I fix it?

Solution

If you installed ecu.test as a user a long time ago, entries for the file associations are also created in the Windows registry for your user.

If you later install newer ecu.test versions for all users as an administrator, the file association entries are created in a different location in the registry.

If you now try to open a file by double-clicking it, the outdated entry from the previous per-user installation always takes precedence and the old ecu.test version will launch.

This might lead to confusion for you, since you may have forgotten which version of ecu.test was installed or is still present.

There are two options to fix it:

1. Uninstall the per-user installed application

2. Unregister the per-user installed application using, e.g.
   “%localappdata%\ecu.test 2026.1\register.exe” -o unregisterFileTypes -u

Which option should I choose?

• If you no longer need the version that was last installed for your user, select Option 1.

• However, if you want to keep that version, you must use option 2

Please note that Option 2 requires a version of ecu.test 2024.1 or later that includes register.exe.
